How to paint popcorn ceiling?

by Admin | Sep 12, 2025 | DIY

Popcorn ceiling is one of those finishes that is popular in older homes. The textured, bumpy appearance helps to hide imperfections and dampen sound. Typically, popcorn ceiling was created with a spray-on or paint-on treatment like styrofoam or vermiculite. However, some popcorn ceilings contained asbestos. Popcorn ceiling can fade over time, so re-painting is a common approach to updating the look and feel of your interior spaces. Complete removal of popcorn ceiling can be costly in some cases so it might be warranted to paint over the surface. The below article outlines steps to painting popcorn ceilings.

1. Inspect for Asbestos

Popcorn ceiling may have to be tested for asbestos. Asbestos was used in many ceiling because strength. However asbestos can cause health issues so you want to avoid disturbing this surface. You can test for asbestos using a home testing kit.

2. Prepare the Room Prior to Painting

Make sure to cover furniture, adjacent surfaces, and adjacent finishes with drop sheets or other protection. This is especially the case if you are spray applying paint to the popcorn ceiling.

3. Cleaning the Ceiling

Popcorn ceilings are dust magnets. Removal of excess dirt and grim, and even cobwebs should be done prior to painting. Before painting, it’s essential to thoroughly clean the surface to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish. Use a soft-bristle brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to gently remove debris. For stubborn grime, lightly wipe with a damp cloth or sponge, taking care not to damage the texture.

4. Repair Damages

Patch cracks or holes using joint compound. Let it dry completely and sand lightly if needed. Apply a second coat if the surface isn't smooth after sanding. Ensure the patched area blends seamlessly with the surrounding wall. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth before priming and painting for a flawless finish.

5. Prime the Ceiling

Use a thick-nap roller or sprayer to apply a stain-blocking primer designed for textured surfaces. Priming a ceiling can require 45 minutes to a few hours prior to applying subsequent passes of primer. If there is staining, waiting a day or more can be required to ensure the primer is cured properly prior to painting the popcorn ceiling. With serious staining, multiple passes of primer application could be required.

6. Choose the Right Paint

Almost double the quantity of paint is required to paint popcorn ceilings, just due to the nature of the surface of a popcorn ceiling being absorbent and textured.

Choose a matte or flat paint for painting popcorn ceilings. Avoid glossy finishes, which highlight imperfections.

7. Apply Paint

Painting the popcorn ceiling can be done with a roller and subsequent passes. You want a roller that will allow you to get allot of paint on it. Something like a ¾” roller wheel. The roller should be loaded with paint.

You can get as close to the edge of the ceiling as possible and then use a brush to finish off the edges. A small 2 inch brush is a great choice where the ceiling meets walls or moldings and cornice work.

The ceiling should be covered with paint but not so covered that the ceiling drips paint. Paint needs to dry for a few hours depending on the manufacturer’s instructions prior to applying another coat.

You can also use an airless sprayer to paint a textured ceiling.

8. Let Dry and Touch Up

Once your popcorn ceiling has been painted, inspect the surface for necessary touch ups. Look for uneven paint coverage, missed spots, or areas where the texture may have been damaged. Use a small brush or roller to carefully apply touch-up paint. Ensure consistency in texture and color for a polished appearance.

Summary

Painting popcorn ceiling is a great way to go to improve the overall look and aesthetic of your home. Rather than investing in costly popcorn ceiling removal, you can paint your popcorn ceiling for a fresh look and feel.
