Does eggshell paint have a sheen?
Yes eggshell has a a slight sheen. If you want paint with absolutely no sheen then go with a matte or flat paint. Eggshell finish falls somewhere between flat and satin in terms of glossiness. It has a soft velvet like appearance that reflects small amounts of light which makes it a popular choice for areas where a bit of durability is desired without the shine of higher-gloss finishes. This makes it common for uses in living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms because it is cleanable but also looks great.
However if you want a totally non-reflective surface, ideal for hiding wall imperfections or creating a more contemporary look, then flat or matte paint is the best option. Flat paint absorbs more light rather than reflecting it slightly like eggshell paint. Keep in mind, though, that flat paint is less washable and can show marks or stains more easily than eggshell.
Your choice between eggshell and flat should depend on the room’s purpose, lighting, and traffic level. For example, a high-traffic hallway might benefit from eggshell, while a formal dining room might look great with the deep, soft elegance of a flat finish.
Benefits of Eggshell Paint
- Good mix of durability and flat aesthetic for light absorption and minimum reflectivity.
- More durable than a flat or matte paint.
- Offers a soft low sheen finish that absorbs light.
- Better suited for moderate traffic areas like living rooms and hallways.
- Can be easier to touch up than semi-gloss or gloss finishes.
- May hide imperfections in application of paint finish better than a semi-gloss paint.
- Slightly lower sheen than a satin finish paint.
Negatives of Eggshell Paint
- Not as durable as a semi-gloss or gloss paint used for interior purposes.
- Generally not recommended for applications for interior trim, baseboard, ceiling trim, or mouldings.
- Cannot match the rate of hiding imperfections in painting like flat or matte paints.
- Surface preparation still matters, so uneven textures may show through if not prepped properly for eggshell paint.
- Might not hold up as well in higher traffic areas like kitchens, and bathrooms.

When to use eggshell paint for your home interior painting services
Eggshell paint offers a great mixture of durability and ease of application. For these reasons eggshell paint can be recommended for moderate traffic areas in a household like a dining room, living room, family room, or specific hallways. It has a low sheen so light noise from light fixtures may generally not be a problem. However if there is excessive lighting in a specific location a lower sheen paint like matte of flat paint could be warranted. It can be used similarly to a satin paint but with a lower sheen, is better for lower traffic areas than satin.
